We were allocated in a group of 3 at the beginning and the first thing camp up on my mind was 'group project?'. The new project Bespoke gives us the opportunity to customise a piece of jewellery/ fashion accessory/ shoe for our customer. I am working with Yi Hong, in order to make a product that suits her, of course I need to have a well understanding of her personality, what she likes and hates. She told me likes natural environments such as forests, seasides and prairies, hence she hated places with crowded people. Although she likes natural environment, she is afraid of insects which is unavoidable in the nature world. I do not feel very confident with this project but I hope it will get better when I have done some research.
I have narrowed down the information I got from her and try to generate ideas out of them today. As mentioned before, she does not like crowded places so, I want to make something that creates her a personal space then hopefully she will be confident and feel comfortable surround by lots of people.
As Yi Hong likes deer, when I was searching some photos of deers, I found the horns of deer quite inspirational and think I can make something out base on the shape of the horns. In library, I found a book called Patterns and Nature, it suggests that seashell and horn of mountain sheep have similar shapes and form of structure. Then I think why don't I find a thing each from the sea and land that have something in common and see if I can combine them and create a new shape out of them.
After looking at the book Patterns and Nature yesterday, I decided to use the shape of deer's horn and coral to develop the shape of the piece that I am making for Yi Hong.
I now need to make some paper model in order to help me decide which idea to use, where to locate the piece and also things that I can improve.
Looking at the paper models I made, I quite like the idea of model 3 which cover part of the face and I think it will provide Yi Hong the sense of security too. I want to develop this idea further and start to think about the material of the piece.
I decided to use wire mesh to build up the inside of the model because I have worked with it before. For the surface of the model, I first wanted to use paper mache as it gives a rough texture that feels more nature. However, I realised it is to heavy for the wire mesh so I have changed the surface material to textured paper. As painting can be time consuming, I chose to use spray paint to colour the plain surface of the textured paper. It also gives a very harmonious and yet colourful tone.
For the inside of the model, I applied glitter on by mod podge to give a shinny finish and also want to create a starry-sky-like effect (as she said she likes to imagine so that this little space can provide a space for her.)
