Eat Up

The project title 'Eat Up' makes me feel excited even the project hasn't even started yet, who doesn't love food? Looking through the main brief, there are 4 options for us to choose from. I am struggle between Option 3 (product design) and Option 4 (JFFA). So I have looked at the artists provided in the brief and looked through some products from them, JFFA seem to be the option for me.

When taking some potential inspirational photos for the project, I have focused on the face when people eat and also the shape of food. When reviewing the photos, I realised the faces when people eating are quite hilarious which I will not want others to see. There are a few ideas on my mind but they are not very clear yet, hopefully there will be some great ideas come out when discussing with my classmates.

Project Day 1

By the end of the lesson, each group had to present their ideas to the class. With the first language isn't English, it was quite terrifying for me to speak with everyone's attention. I do not know what I was talking but I think this is a good opportunity for me to practice as I am sure that there will be many more similar situations coming up in the year. It is nice to hear what our classmates and tutors think about our ideas so we could improve them. Also, it is interesting to see how others generate their ideas which can be so different from ours and unexpected too.

Before Day 2, I have sketched a few ideas in sketchbook and realised they are all functional. Hopefully I can think of some ideas that are decorative.

Project Day 2

I have looked at the photos I took again and generated some more ideas. However, I am still unsure which idea I should bring further as I am kind of standing between jewellery and footwear.

I have decided to go for my shoe design inspired by a lobster that I had for my dinner because I chose jewellery for my previous project and this could be a good opportunity for me to explore my ability in shoe designing. I think lobster is strong and powerful which brings a sense of imposing manner if it is wore on foot.

Self-direted study day

I have discovered a few designers that have used animal / animal's legs, paws, claws as shoes/ shoe heels. Including Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacob (designed for Louis Vuitton Spring 2011),Iris Shieferstein, Maskull Lasserre, Masaya Kushino and Iris van Herpen...etc. Amongst these designers, Alexander McQueen's shoes--- Armadillo has caught my attention as it is too high that many models have refused to wear. In addition it also looks like a crab claw to me which is relevant to my design!

Project Day 3

We had a tutorial section with our tutor today and each of us got 5 minutes to present our idea and ask question. I found the feedback from Georgia very helpful as I have never thought of the insole of my shoes before and I now realised it is also important and can make it a better design if I have consider about it. As we had our tutorial in groups so we got the chance to see other's ideas that is not necessarily within our option. The comments made by tutor to other students can be useful for us too, hence I think this is a very good activity to do in every project.

In the morning, we were asked to fill in a action plan for today, my aims are: draw three 3-dimensional sketches of my final idea, a simple model making (paper) and to decide the material for my final model. By the end of the day, only the first aim has been completed. But this has helped me to understand what myself can do in this period of time so I can have a better plan and time management in the future.
