We started our last project before the part one assessment today - Surface and Structure. I have looked through the brief and collect 15 photos each for surface and structure, but I could not get my mind round exactly what I have to do for this project yet. And yes, I have decided to go for jewellery design again.
In class, we have created a list of words for both surface and structure and we are asked to choose one word from each list, then generate ideas base on the two words chosen. The words I chose for surface is hairy and skeletal for structure. Hairy and skeletal do not seem to be related but it is the reason for me to choose them at the same time. Linking two irrelevant words together can be challenging and this can be proved because I found it extremely difficult to create ideas. I tried drawing ideas by separating the two words and see if I can combine them together by the end.
Library's Materials Collection
We went to KX's library to listen the talk from Jess and Artemide in the afternoon. It is exciting to see so many materials in the library and I can not wait to explore them! Although I am not really interested in lighting, the talk from Artemide was very informative and it was good to listen to a talk from company that has been in the market since 1960.
Back to KX campus today, meaning there is no workshop available for us but we only have to make some primary models today so workshop is not a problem. Benjamin (our tutor today) asked us to come up with the strongest 5 ideas and choose from the 5 and create 3 models. 5 strong ideas is already a problem for me because looking at my sketchbook, I think there is no strong idea at all. We then presented our ideas in a small group of 4 and I decided to make the model for the ideas that my classmates like and see how it goes.
I am not satisfied with the models I made today, I aim to make a decision on what will be the final idea (not the final design though) of the project by Monday the 10th.
Independent working day
Today I have gone through my ideas again and tried to take an old idea further. There is a idea I wished to do yesterday but I didn't have the right material and I think it will be a good idea to make it at home. It is basically a hip bone like accessory that covers the chin and some of our face. The concept of this is to use a relatively strong part of our body (in this case - hip bone) to protect a weaker part of us (chin/ face). As I used cardboard to make this model, although I find this idea interesting and think I can bring that forward, I would like to use a different material that allows me to build up the volume of it (more 3D).
